Indigenous Protocols for the Visual Arts.

Welcome to INDIGENOUS PROTOCOLS dot ART, a space that demonstrates CARFAC’s commitment to supporting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists.

The materials on this website were designed to provide practical guidelines for respectful engagement with Indigenous Peoples. It is part of an ongoing initiative to strengthen respect for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis visual art and artists, and legal and moral rights in the territory now known as Canada.

Recognizing that longstanding discussions on Indigenous Protocols, and Intellectual and Cultural Property rights are complex, dynamic, and unique to each Indigenous Nation and community, the materials on this website will be updated as discussions and new precedents emerge.

Language Acknowledgement

We would like to acknowledge the many languages spoken by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people across the lands commonly known as Canada. We recognize the dominance of English on the website. This is due, in part, to English being a commonly understood language across the territory. However, we aim to include information and content that reflects the many Indigenous languages. The Protocols Resource Guide is also available in French, and it will soon be available in Plains Cree and Inuktitut.

Land Acknowledgement

The hosts of this site respectfully acknowledge the historical territories, lands, and resources of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people across so-called Canada. We affirm the Articles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and recognize the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples.
